Look around any society, and what they celebrate or commemorate. Chances are, you’ll find some sort of statues or monuments. So think about what kind of statues your societies in a fantasy world have. How well-maintained are their monuments? Are they relatively recent, or fallen, crumbling ruins, from an ancient empire? Monuments also serve as valuable landmarks. “That crooked tree” could be almost any tree, but “a mile upriver of the Argonath statues, on the West bank” is highly specific. If you want to have your players feel at home in your world, let them locate themselves. Mention the landmarks they pass, and map around these.
